Awards
The New York Times Regional Newspaper Group contains
some of the best community newspapers in the country.
Our papers earn high honors in state and regional competitions,
but they also have garnered more widely recognized awards.
Four Pulitzer Prizes have been awarded to three of our
papers: The Press Democrat and The Tuscaloosa News each
earned one, and The Gainesville Sun was honored with two.
In recent years, our newspapers and their newsroom staff
members have repeatedly won top awards in international
competitions of the Association of Food Journalists and
the Society for News Design; and in the national contests
of the American Association of Sunday and Feature Editors,
the Associated Press Sports Editors and the Society of
American Business Editors and Writers.
Many of these larger honors were first recognized with
a win in the monthly Chairman's Awards contest sponsored
by Arthur Sulzberger Jr., the chairman of The New Times
Co. Two Chairman's Awards are presented each month and
winners receive a check for $500 and a personal letter
from Sulzberger.

In this Pulitzer Prize winning
shot, Press Democrat photographer Annie Wells captured
firefighter Don Lopez grabbing a sapling after diving
into a flooded creek to rescue Marglyn Paseka, 15, from
the rapidly rising water.
